5 Card PLO – 5 Is The New 4

A lot of players love Omaha over Texas Hold’em, do you know why? It’s because players are dealt with 4-hole cards instead of just 2, this advantage helps them have a good chance of getting a better hand. 5 card Omaha is one of the best versions to be derived from Omaha. Guess what will happen if that number was increased to 5?

5 Card Omaha Poker is played with the standard 52-card deck. In Texas Holdem Poker 2 hole cards are dealt with every player and in Pot Limit Omaha every player is dealt with 4 hole cards. In 5 Card Omaha, each player is dealt with 5 hole cards.

5 Card Omaha Poker

Like its other poker counterparts, 5 card Omaha Poker begins with two blinds i.e., Big blind & small blind. The blinds are forced bets or minimum bets that need to be made by the two players in order for the action to begin.

The dealer i.e the person who would distribute the cards is indicated by a disk called the dealer button, or simply, the button. Before the cards are distributed, the player to the left of the button puts in small blind i.e half the size of the minimum bet for the game. The player to that player’s left puts in the big blind or minimum bet amount required for the game. For example, in a 10/20 table, the small blind would be 10 chips while the big blind would be 20 chips.

Preflop: Based on the five cards that have been dealt with the player can call, raise, or fold. The game starts to the left of the big blind, has the option to fold, call, and raise.

The Flop: Once the first round of betting is over, three community cards are distributed to all the active players. This is the time for the players to judge the strength of the hand based on the combination of two hole cards and three community cards and the next round betting begins.

Turn: Once the flop betting is completed, one more community card is dealt and the players will have now to again judge the strength of their cards and the betting continues.

River: After the turn comes to the river where one more community card is face-up on the board. This is the last and final card and each player now again calculates their card strength and the action comes to an end.

Which hand wins in 5 Card PLO:

During the showdown, the best hand is declared as the winner at the end of the river card. To come up with the best possible combination, two hole cards from the player and the three community cards are combined.

The player who has the best hand in the table is the winner of the pot. If one or multiple players come up with the best combination, the pot is shared equally among them. A new hand begins, once the pot has been awarded to the winner(s).
